Almost 25 years ago, I was shocked to learn that I had breast cancer. Really? Me? I was slim, athletic and healthy, and had already completed 7 Marathons! I had no family history of breast cancer. How did I get breast cancer? Although my breast cancer was detected at an early stage, the specimens showed that my cancer cells were "aggressive" and if they had gone undetected for much longer, they could have spread beyond my breasts. After 2 lumpectomies, several weeks of radiation therapy, and 5 years of Tamoxifen treatment, I am now cancer free. I am lucky. But so many other women have not been so fortunate. Everyone's breast cancer journey is different.
Since my diagnosis, many of my other friends have gotten breast cancer too. In fact, 1 in 8 women will experience breast cancer in her lifetime. And it turns out that family history is NOT a big factor for most people - 85% of new breast cancer patients have NO FAMILY HISTORY of breast cancer. Fortunately, breast cancer research has come a long way in 25 years, and more patients are being diagnosed in time and are receiving newer and better treatments, with higher survival rates. But for everyone, a breast cancer diagnosis is the scariest thing - for the patients, their families, friends, coworkers and community.
